How to wear them: harem pants

March 16, 2015

Harem pants? For boys? Why yes!

When my three of the five boys were aged 7, 3 and not quite four months old, we took them to live in India for a year. And amongst many other wonderful and glorious things that we discovered in that year harem pants were one of the most pragmatic. Harem pants are infinitely useful, comfortable and quite funky and we decided we couldn't live without them.

Harem pants - discovered in India - a cliche? Yes.

Here's how they're less hippy and more happy boy.

  • Easy to wear. They have elasticated waist - for easy on and off and no fussy doing up. Many people ask us to source trousers for boys to pull on and run in. These are them.
  • Loose fit - for comfort for any shaped little person but funkier than sweat pants. And with cuffed ankles to avoid dragging hems lines through mud, sand, grass. What's more these ride up in hot (airy shorts) and down for an unwelcome chill.

  • Unisex - so can go from brother to sister to cousin, no matter whether they are boy or girl.

What's more they cover skin from midday sun hot weather, mosquitoes or nettles, they come in lovely prints, are lighter weight than other full length trousers. And Harem Pants are great for trips away when they can double up as PJ's, spares, lounge pants.

My now 11 year old wears them as pyjamas, my 7 year old for sports and my soon to be 4 year old dances around in them at home, to school, on long walks whatever the weather.

Dress them up with other bright prints or tone them down with a plain print tee or jumper.

Harem pants? - Would you wear them?

At "Five Boys Clothing" we offer as much guidance as possible when it comes to sizing as we know that age is not an exact science when it comes to measuring for the right size clothing.

Any European brands provide a height measurement - and we always attempt to describe the fit. Please find a guide to European sizing below.

The European size is based on the actual height in centimeters, example a size 122 means 122 centimeter, that is for a child in height 122 centimeter each centimeter = 0.39 inch, each inch = 2.54 centimeters

EU Size (cm)

As with all things this is not an exact science. If you normally buy big - we recommend you buy big, and vice versa.

When relevant, we identify whether products are true to size, big for size or small for size.

If you need any help regarding specific sizes please contact us at and we'll get staright back to you.

PS: Don't forget we do offer returns so if you want to try the products we're happy to send them out to you.
