Palm Appeal - The Money We Raised

June 02, 2015

In March 2015 the severe tropical Cyclone Pam hit Vanuatu and many other Pacific Nations causing widespread destruction to homes schools and buildings. The devastation in the Pacific left many individuals displaced and many without a clean water source.

As part of the fundraising effort, Five Boys Clothing started the Palm Appeal. The response was gratifying and we sold over 130 pieces raising over £1000.

What happened to the donation?

We channeled the money down two routes:

  • through UNICEF to support relief efforts in Vanuatu, and
  • To provide support in Kiribati, a lesser published region hit by the Cyclone, through the Island Rescue Project.

Through The Island Rescue Project we helped buy:

  • 2x 1,000L water storage tanks

  • 40x 20 Lt water carrying/storage cubes

  • 2x Community Water Filter tanks – Betio hospital or Nawerewere hospital

  • A number of life straws and

  • A colloidal silver manufacturing item that will purify water by killing virus and bacteria which we will use to produce lots of clean water.

What now?

The response we had was overwhelming – but sadly the urgency of the situation has not passed, for either Vanuatu or Kiribati. In Vanuatu the changing weather means that those without permanent shelter need supplied for the warmth. In Kiribati, there is a finite amount of available water.

We’re asking for your support once again in either buying or asking others to buy a limited edition, high quality palm appeal t-shirt or bag for the summer.  And again we’ll pass on all the profits to The Island Rescue Project whose remit has extended to provide support in Vanuatu too.

What is The Island Rescue Project?

Originally set up with the purpose of  “helping to reduce the high infant mortality rate in the Pacific islands of Kiribati, through child health & clean water.", The Island Resource Project address both the grass root problems by providing water collection and treatment facilities and medical support, and help mitigate the problems through education and awareness.

They do this by:

  • Buying and installing tanks for the collection of rainwater
  • Providing instruction and equipment for the production Black African soap using local banana and coconut
  • Providing life straws to local communities
  • Supplying medicine and nutrition packages for malnourished children and other in need.

Since Cyclone Pam the project has extended its remit to support those in Vanuatu too. For more information and to get up to information on the support they are providing, please follow them on Facebook by clicking on this link.

While the Palm Appeal is predominately about raising funds to support the relief efforts in Vanuatu and Kiribati, it is also to raise awareness. For more information about related issues and other fundraising events, please follow us on Facebook.

At "Five Boys Clothing" we offer as much guidance as possible when it comes to sizing as we know that age is not an exact science when it comes to measuring for the right size clothing.

Any European brands provide a height measurement - and we always attempt to describe the fit. Please find a guide to European sizing below.

The European size is based on the actual height in centimeters, example a size 122 means 122 centimeter, that is for a child in height 122 centimeter each centimeter = 0.39 inch, each inch = 2.54 centimeters
